Welcome to our Research Pages

The Biology Department was founded in 1965 as an integrated, and multidisciplinary, unit. Traditional boundaries which fragment the subject of biology are absent, and as a result a number of highly productive interdisciplinary collaborations have emerged. In 2002 we moved into our new labs, which were funded through a £23M JIF award from BBSRC, with additional funds from Yorkshire Cancer Research, HEFCE and the University of York. The labs provide 10,000m2 of research space, as well as the Structural Biology Laboratory of the Department of Chemistry. Part of the new Development is the Technology Facili

Overview of Research

Recent dramatic progress in our understanding of the nature of life has revolutionized the science of biology. Applications of the methods, concepts, and approaches of modern mathematics, physics, chemistry, and information science are providing deep insight into basic biological problems such as the manner in which genes and viruses replicate themselves; the control of gene expression in cells; the regulation of cellular activity; the mechanisms of growth and development; and the nature and interactions of nerve activity, brain function, and behavior. Qualified experimental and computational biologists will find opportunities for challenging work in basic research as well as in medicine and in biotechnology.
Because of the eminent position of the California Institute of Technology in both the physical and biological sciences, students at the Institute have an unusual opportunity to be introduced to modern biology.

Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior

Ecological interests include aquatic chemical ecology, evolutionary ecology, aquatic toxicology, population, community, and ecosystem ecology, biological oceanography, theoretical ecology, and sensory ecology. Molecular evolution and the evolution of development are two areas of research focus in the School that serve to integrate molecular and evolutionary biology

Research

Research in the Biology Department is diverse and includes all aspects of the contemporary life sciences. Indeed, this diversity is one of the major strengths of the department, facilitating integrative research based on interactions and collaborations between investigators in different disciplines.

The department has recently undergone a major expansion, with the recruitment of new faculty members in several areas, including the molecular biology of development, neurobiology, and ecology and evolution. Laboratories of many of our faculty members are housed in the new interdisciplinary Life Science & Engineering Building, completed in 2005, which also houses faculty from the departments of Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, and the Program in Bioinformatics. Our research laboratories are supported by a variety of shared research facilities, including core laboratories for microarray analysis, proteomics, automated DNA sequencing, electron and confocal microscopy, and analysis of stable isotopes.

Faculty research in the department represents four major areas

The Department of Aquatic Biology has no collections of preserved specimens but rather coordinates with other Academy Research Departments (particularly Ichthyology and Invertebrate Zoology) and the Steinhart Aquarium in its investigations of the biology of aquatic organisms. The library of genetic material that exists in those departments, be it a fish scale or a tissue sample, can provide evidence for studies of the biology and conservation of aquatic species, populations, and ecosystems.

Department research has combined field and laboratory studies of aquatic animal evolution and behavior, ranging from microscopic bioluminescent bacteria to macroscopic man-eating sharks. Using the facilities and skills of the Steinhart Aquarium and its staff, Department staff and colleagues have maintained populations of endangered Winter-run Sacramento River Chinook salmon and Tidewater gobies, increasing their number and probability for

System biology

is a relatively new biological study field that focuses on the systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems, thus using a new perspective (integration instead of reduction) to study them. Particularly from year 2000 onwards, the term is used widely in the biosciences, and in a variety of contexts.

Because the scientific method has been used primarily toward reductionism, one of the goals of systems biology is to discover new emergent properties that may arise from the systemic view used by this discipline in order to understand better the entirety of processes that happen in a biologi

Biology and Microbiology

These are exciting times in biology, and San Diego State University is a stimulating place for biological study. Recent breakthroughs in genetic engineering, genomics, immunology, and new ideas in evolution, systematics and ecology have all contributed to an atmosphere of enthusiasm and innovation. These subjects and many more can be found in the research programs in the Biology Department, where the curriculum spans the entire spectrum of life, from DNA to entire evolutionary lineages, and from viruses to fir trees to whales.

Microbiology is the study of bacteria, viruses, yeasts, molds, algae and protozoa. These microorganisms are important in their effect on the health and well being of all living creatures, including humans, and they are the key to the biological revolution in genetic engineering. In addition, they are vital to environmental science, food production, and the marine environment.

Research is at the heart of biology (any science) and something we would like to expose all of our students to. One way to do that is through our departmental Honors program. Excellent junior biology majors are invited to apply to the honors program which includes carrying out, writing up and presenting original research in the area of biology. Several faculty members are available to serve as mentors in this process. For the past several years we have been able to sponsor up to 12 students per summer doing research funded from various sources. Current information can be obtained by

Removing SoftBarrier can be done in two ways. Manually and automatically. Unfortunately, manual removal has proven to be quite difficult to do. For beginners, it is strongly advised that a legitimate anti spyware tool be used as removing SoftBarrier manually is very complicated especially if you are not familiar with the registry files of a computer system. However, if you consider yourself a professional, then what you will need to do is delete all related DLL and LNK files in your system's registry, normally located in the LOCAL_HKEY_USER folder. You will also need to disable all related websites, remove all related system files in program folders, and block all related system processes

Making Real Money With Affiliate Marketing

Regardless of many industries laying off thousands of employees or outright shutting their doors in today's troublesome economic environment, there's one industry that's flourishing and helping thousands of regular folks earn cash.

Some hard workers are even replacing the earnings they earned at their usual roles, permitting them to run away from the 9-5 work day for good and work from home on a full time basis. What's this industry? Affiliate promotion. Internet marketing programs are easy by nature : They work by rewarding marketers for promoting products on the Net. The affiliates are then compensated on a commission basis. Essentially , affiliates get paid each time they refer new customers to the site of the company they're promoting. Becoming an affiliate is one of the best online profit-making opportunities out there, and the breadth of products that may be promoted as an affiliate is lurching. Affiliate internet marketing creates an inexpensive option for giant and tiny corporations alike to reach out and expose their products to a much bigger audience of potential purchasers. Instead of being restricted to only 1 huge webiste, corporations of any size can now supply an affiliate program and have their products promoted on hundreds or thousands of individual sites, at no advance cost to them.

Similarly , the affiliate selling industry also gives an almost unlimited source for earnings for those that offensively promote offers.

Affiliates have been continually reaping the advantages of bigger profits as the affiliate promoting industry continues to grow in acceptance.

Get the best training course here on how to be successful in the affiliate marketing industry. CBAffiliateSuccess.com

Associates can simply earn anywhere from 30-90% of the profits from each sale that comes from clients they refer, and with some affiliate programs offering repeated monthly payouts for their products, the earning potential becomes even higher. CPA promoting, in which affiliates can earn cash purely for referring traffic and having visitors do as tiny as complete a short form, without even making a purchase, is the most recent hot trend in affiliate selling, and guarantees to keep the industry very lucrative and exciting for a few years to come. Unlike any other enterprises, there are no categorical criteria for becoming an affiliate, apart from a commitment to work conscientiously and some awareness of online marketing and the way to go about researching and promoting the best offers for maximum profits. BioloBiologygy

Biology is the natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.[1]

Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to form fundamental axioms of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, gene theory, energy, and homeostasis.[2] Subdisciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interrelate with their environment

Kabbalah as a Basis for a Synthesis of Sciences

The complexity of research
Until recently Kabbalah was a subject for historians, philosophers, and individual researchers. Study of this science is complex due to the specifics of its development and its unique language.

Let us examine each aspect of the complexity in more detail.

The specifics of development

Philosopher and physicist F. Capra has importantly stated that the roots of Western science go back to the mystical philosophy of the ancient Greeks. As Greek philosophy developed, it chose the path of rationalism, and thus grew significantly distant from its mystical sources. It eventually led to a worldview that sharply contradicts the worldview of the Eastern peoples.

Dogs Show Their Amicable Attitude by Swinging Tails to Left

As is known to all, dogs often prick up their ears or tails wagging cheerfully to show amicable attitude to people, however, the way of a dog wags its tail is not as simple as people might imagine.
A research team, which is a department of Biology from the University of Victoria in Canada, found that the dogs' tails should tend to put the left when they come across similar unfamiliar dogs, the same case in the neutral stimuli, when they feel the stimulation from heterogeneous such as master, strangers or cats, the dog's tail tend to swing to the right. Therefore, the way of the tail swing to the left may be a dog more friendly, intimate performance. The researchers used a robotic dog model to discover the response when they meet the similar, the tail turns left or right. The robotic dog model which is wrapped by imitation leather is with the ture size of a dog, through the built-in drivers, the researchers can control its tail swing by using remote control.
